In 1979, 41 years ago, Irmgard Hörmann, saw that older adults in Honolulu were not receiving proper nutrition and attention because they were homebound and virtually cut off from the rest of the community. Her solution: she would bring the community and hot meals to them. The 63 year old Hörmann started Hawai‘i Meals on Wheels with six clients and six volunteers.
Irmgard Hormann passed away in 2016 at age 99, but Hawai‘i Meals on Wheels continues. We now have more than 500 volunteers and will serve more than 1,000 clients this year (2020). The global pandemic has increased the need for meals and in August of this year, we delivered 17,699 meals!
Hawai‘i Meals on Wheels is dedicated to helping Oahu’s elders and individuals with disabilities preserve their independence at home. We do this primarily by providing nutritious meals and regular personal interaction with those we serve.
We are a private, not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization that operates with the help of the generosity of people like you. Mahalo nui loa, thank you very much for your help!
